What are Human Rights?

Human rights are the rights and freedoms that we all have

In the UK:

- Some human rights are based on our physical needs
The right to life. To food. To shelter.
- Other humans rights protect us
The right to be free from torture, cruel treatment and abuse
- Human rights are also there to ensure we develop to our fullest potential.
The right to education. To work. To participate in your comunnity

Everybody has human rights. It doesnt matter who you are, where you coome from, what language you speak or what religion you belong to. You have a duty to respect the rights of others, just as they have a duty to respect yours. Nobody can take your rights away.

Why do human rights matter to me ?

Human rights matter to all of us.

- One child in four is physically abused.

Where do rights come from?

Human rights are base on the values of:

- Dignity and self respect
- Justice and fairness (legal problems)
- Respect and respect for other religions and cultures.
- Equality and justice

Human rights were offically recognised as values by the world when the United Nations was set up.

What is the United Nations?
- The United Nations (UN) is an international organisation that was established in 1945, the year the second world war ended
- Its founder hoped it would be able to prevent castastrophes like the Holecaust from happening in the future.
- So promoting human rights became the aim of the UN, along with maintaining international peace and reducing poverty.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
- The United Nations/ Universal Declaration of Human Rights  (UDHR) is the most famous human rights agreement in the world. It contains 30 human rights.

The Power of One Summary

The Power of One is an influential film made in 1992, it is set during the thirties and forties in South Africa. PK who is the main character is brought up in rural South Africa by his British born widowed mother and his African Zulu Nanny whose son Tonderai is his best friend.

The main themes in this movie is power, depression, self realisation, discrimination, leadership and courage. PK suffers a hard life, where he is sent to a African boarding school, here he is bullied as he is the only English boy. Throughout the movie he loses many people close to him including his mother, chicken, many of his friends and his girlfriend.

This movie made me realise how bad racism is around the world and how many people are treated unequally. It is a good film that shows reality back in the 1930's- 40's.
